29/10/2008 12:00:00 AM
Small batch winemaking from Dom Torzi and neighbour Peter Manning sourcing from vineyards across the northern sectors of the Valley this blend (52%G 28%M 20%S) Becomes a seamless red berry beauty, medium bodied with a lovely lifted, ripe, summer plum flavour in the middle of the mouth. It feels very naturally made and realised. Barossa Valley, 14.5%, 93pts, Lovely.

Veronique Old Vine Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2007 - The Wine Front

Righto. I have to come clean here. Tonight I was tasting a raft of ( and some much more expensive) cool climate Shiraz and I just really wasn’t in the mood for any of them. This hit the spot though. It’s a blend of Angaston Grenache (52%), Nuriootpa Mataro (28%) and Greenock/Angaston Shiraz 20% from vines that range in age from 45 to 94 years and is raised in old wood. All this for under $20.
Nice and juicy with a seductive combination of cherry, nuts, chocolate, new leather and a subtle menthol and fresh basil fragrance. It’s full bodied and rich, but not heavy, with choc-nut and raspberry flavours and fine grained supple tannins. All easy going - not too sweet and not too dry. Perfect at this price point and bloody good drinking. If you want a bit of old vine satisfaction for under $20 then walk this way.

Rich and black with cherry jam, black fruits, menthol, liquorice, Bounty Bars and vanilla oak. Flamboyant, not exactly subtle, but very winning. On the palate full bodied but not heavy; it drinks beautifully with its flavours of sweet black fruit, cherry and dark chocolate. It has smooth ripe tannin and an even flow through the mouth. It’s a gorgeous easy going crowd pleaser of the very highest quality.

Another Dominic Torzi Shiraz, and true to form, a good one. Aged totally in old wood, but the American oak component still rings clear, with vanilla and coconut to the fore. Comes into its own in the mouth, silky, chocolatey and with rich black fruit flavours that finish savoury and with tight, drying tannin. Most importantly though, it has lovely balance and rates high for drinkability, qualities that are sometimes overlooked in a genre where big is often seen as better.
